There are several things that are important to remember if you are relocating to the UK. First and foremost is getting a work permit so that you may become gainfully employed. Without a permit, you will not be able to find a job in the UK. In order to get a work permit, you will have to visit the Home Office Border and Immigration Agency. Once you have applied, you will have to wait 2 weeks for the application to be processed.

Sometimes it can take a little longer to get a work permit because vacancies have to be advertised for a certain amount of time. There are some exceptions to this however. If it is a job that is considered to be a shortage occupation such as teachers or people who work in various healthcare professions, then exceptions can be made. This means you can apply for the permit without having to wait out the mandatory advertisement period for the position.

Companies are generally required to be well established before they are able to get work permits for their employees. For companies that have not been around a while, it is still possible to work around this. One of the ways is through the highly skilled migrant program. This program helps workers who are professionals in a certain area to get the jobs that they need, even if they need a permit for it. The good news is, there are alternate programs in place.

During the application process, the person will be able to visit the UK; however they will not be able to engage in any work related activities. They will be able to do some things that are typically allowed of business visitors though. This is allowed for a period of up to 6 months and includes things like advising, consulting and training. It also includes learning about the needs of UK clients, however providing clients a service is prohibited until approval.

As you can see there are some things to consider when immigrating to the UK. Although they are not hard requirements, they must be met before obtaining gainful employment. Be sure you are prepared for the waiting period for your work permit so that you will not be in a tight spot after your move. In many cases it might be best to apply before your relocation is complete. This way it will be progressing as you make other arrangements.
