When film scouts go looking for locations to film their next flick, it’s the places with the most natural beauty, stunning landscapes, or ancient sights which are used the most often. Destinations like Egypt, Morocco, and even Malta are often used as the locations for films. The island of Malta has seen films like Troy, and Popeye filmed there.

Whether you prefer the idea of Egypt or Malta holidays, you’ll be close to film settings. Egypt was the location of many scenes from the new blockbuster The Adventures of Tintin. Wherever you choose to take the family, it’s a great idea to spend some holiday time discovering the movie sets there.

To follow in the footsteps of intrepid cartoon hero Tintin, ahead of the upcoming 3D movie directed by Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson, visitors to Egypt can discover its ancient marvels. Tintin’s adventures in the Cigars of the Pharoah take him to Cairo and the Pyramids of Giza, as well as into the desert and to the tombs of the ancient pharaohs. Adventurous tourists on Egypt holidays can trace Tintin’s escapades into a real-life pharoah’s tomb in the Valley of the Kings at Luxor. Left undisturbed and hidden by the sands for thousands of years, the tombs are said to be guarded by an ancient curse.

The movie Popeye, which starred funnyman Robin Williams in the title role, was filmed in Anchor Bay on the island of Malta. Such was the popularity of Malta after the film, the island still pays homage to the movie by turning the set into a tourist attraction. Wander around this pretty part of the island, and relive the scenes from this classic family film.

Families can learn about knots at nautical school, take a 20-minute boat ride to view the beautiful coastline, or see a programme about the making of Popeye at the cinema. Popeye’s world is easily accessible during Malta holidays. Buses run to Mellieha from key points around the island including Bugibba and Valletta. Once in Mellieha Bay, visitors can pick up a shuttle bus to Popeye Village.
