The 2010 Road to Atlanta, as the SEC Football Championship is recognized, will likely be a game between Auburn University and also the University of South Carolina. The game will take place on Saturday, December 4 at the Georgia Dome in downtown Atlanta. It’s scheduled to be televised on CBS. This is the 19th year of the SEC Championship game. The championship began in 1992 when the SEC expanded to include Arkansas and South Carolina. The first 2 championship games had been played in Birmingham, but all games since 1994 have been played in Atlanta.

The 2010 SEC Championship game sets the Eastern Division Champion South Carolina Gamecocks against the Western Division Champion Auburn Tigers. Presently Auburn is ranked #2 in the country in all four major polls, and South Carolina is ranked at #17. South Carolina’s record this season is 7-3, 5-3 SEC. They will be considered the home team. Auburn has had an impressive season with 11 wins and no losses. Their conference record is 7-0. They’re considered the visiting team.

Auburn University is intending to win their seventh SEC Championship, their very first since 2004. South Carolina has never won an SEC Championship title. The teams met earlier this year in Auburn in regular conference play. Auburn won that game 35-27. The teams have met nine times within the past. Auburn leads the series with a 7-1-1 record.

The winner of the SEC Championship will get an automatic invite to a BCS Bowl game. South Carolina has never been to a BCS Bowl. Auburn played in the 2005 BCS Sugar Bowl, where they beat Virginia Tech. SEC football fans are invited to enjoy the activities just before the game at the SEC Dr. Pepper Fan Fare. This event is scheduled for December 3-4 at the Georgia World Congress Center. The Fan Fare includes interactive stations where fans can play flag football, practice kicking fieldgoals, and be involved in contests. Team logo items will be readily available for buy.

Approximately 75,000 football fans are expected to be in Atlanta for the SEC Championship game. Fans are encouraged to take MARTA transportation downtown to avoid traffic and parking complications. The game assures to be an exciting one for Auburn and South Carolina fans.
