The secrets of Italy’s automotive heritage
by Lesley Hunt on Apr.03, 2011, under Italy
The Italian automobile industry is a huge employer in the country, giving over 196,000 jobs and is the 5th largest producer of cars in Europe. The Fiat group dominates the industry; over 90% of the Italian cars in 2001 were produced by it. However, it is the glamorous sports cars like the Lamborghinis and the Ferraris that spring to mind when the topic of great Italian cars comes up, and it seems as though Italy is also a prolific producer of these kinds of cars too. The question is why has Italy produced so many great cars?
As a general insight into the market place in Italy, there are many more small business than in other countries, and it is therefore less common to be employed by a large corporation than it is to work for a company that employs less than 100 people. Given this, it seems that for any kind of thing produced, there will tend to be more small manufacturers producing it, than there would be elsewhere. Manufacturers of sports cars do tend to be comparatively small, so perhaps the same thought applies, and that is why there are a lot these kinds of car manufacturers in Italy.
There is also a culture in Italy centred around creating limited numbers of highly refined products, which is very well suited to the production of sports cars. More specifically about the cars, Italian manufacturers like Ferrari design their cars for racing, which encourages the creation of incredible one off cars that are then fitted out with luxuries and released for the road. The one off designs, which are often very beautiful, makes the cars rare, and they grow in price and in infamy over the years.
Another reason Italy is known for producing many great cars might perhaps be the fact that it is home to two companies that produce cars of this calibre, whereas other countries (take Germany and Porsche for example) only tend to have one, if any at all.
Italian manufacturing has its reputation no doubt due to the skill and imagination of those involved in the process, but this cannot be the whole story. The state of the manufacturing industry encourages the approach that is most successful for the building of great high performance cars.
