RONCESVALLES TOWN is home to some of Toronto’s most colourful shopping districts, and it is naturally appealing with its tree lined streets and cost-effective, well saved Edwardian and Victorian homes on deep lots. The area is a mixture of leafy roads and small, family-controlled retail and food shops as well as a very popular strip of organic cafeterias, Thai restaurants, grocers and hip specialty shops. It's also inside walking distance of Toronto’s waterfront parks, the Western Beaches and Boardwalk.Roncesvalles Town property is among the most requested in Toronto.

After WWII, the Roncesvalles area was transformed by the appearance of many Western european newcomers that included a large number of Poles. The Roncesvalles Village retail area north of Queen St. Is the cultural centre of Toronto’s Polish community. (Although thought to be a prominently Polish community, the last 50 years saw many ethnic groupings settle in the area.)

An afternoon stroll thru this area will take you past eating corporations concentrating on standard cuisine: sausages, hand-made pierogies, sauerkraut, cabbage rolls and hearty soups like the exquisite beet-based borscht, good for a cool day. There are numerous notable food markets, delis and trattorias along this route. Fun, community-based cultural events happen often, for example the Roncesvalles Hamlet Polish Festival, a weekend event held each Sep.

For another vibrant commercial shopping area, Queen Street is fast-changing and full of interesting stores. There are lots of antique shops to crawl/ramble thru, and a full-on competition for budding cooks to open a gastronome cafe to exploit this popular spot.

High Park, with its 399 acres of parkland including picnic areas, flower gardens, animal paddocks, an outside amphitheatre, sport facilities and a large pool, is inside walking distance. Sorauren Park is the main outdoor community meeting place, with many gatherings for dog lovers as well as the famous post-Halloween jack o ‘ lantern display. The recreational trails along the waterfront are easily reached. Additonal nearby parks include Charles G. Williams Park at Sorauren & Wabash.
