Penzance Is a Charming Part of the South West To Discover.

The Closest town to Land’s End is Penzance which is sheltered by Mounts Bay.

In traditional Cornish dialect it was originally called ‘Pen Sans’ which translates as Holy Headland, due to a chapel which was formerly located near to the harbour. Penzance and its local area were renowned centuries ago as the favoured haunt for pirates. Today you can still see the remains of the towns colourful history. The town has managed to retain its extraordinary character by implementing tight planning regulations.

Penzance has developed into a delightful artistic place with a great vibe. Being granted its primary Royal Charter in 1512 has helped its growth Penzance is incredibly popular with a diverse array of visitors and currently relies on tourism as its primary source of income.

Penzance is easy to reach by road due to the availability of an good network of dual carriageways and motorways. Also there are several efficient bus and railway links to the town.

Penzance is a great base for discovering Cornwall. The area boasts one of the warmest climates in the United Kingdom due to the warm Atlantic Gulf Stream which gives it a temperate climate throughout the year and encourages spring flowers to bloom early.

In the Victorian period, various exotic plants were brought into the area and there are currently many collections of rare exotic plants growing there which are not found in any other area of the United Kingdom. With a somewhat Mediterranean feel, as a result of its exotic plants this area oozes love and romance.

June is a particularly popular time for Penzance when the popular Golowan Festival brings a multitude of visitors and hotels and rooms become difficult to find. To mark the arrival of Midsummer, this Festival is an ancient tradition of celebration. This festival lasts for ten days and treats visitors to a mixture of colourful parades, live music, art and other entertainment. If all that is not enough there is also a traditional fair with rides, huge fires and firework displays to keep you entertained. There is colour up and down the streets from brightly coloured banners to fresh cut flowers, Penzance comes alive.

Another popular date in the area is the Newlyn Fish Festival , held every year on the last Monday in August. This festival celebrates Newlyn’s tradition of fishing which has been a crucial element of Cornish life which has helped Penzance to develop into the thriving town that it is now. During the festival the whole harbour is filled with many different kind of boats, plus in the market a range of locally caught fish are displayed. In addition to a range of stalls, there is also entertainment to enjoy.

Penzance caters well for families who will find unending choices of food outlets and shopping facilities. If you find history interesting, you might want to visit one of the several surviving ancient monuments in the area.

There are many art studio’s and galleries in the area because Penzance has the largest concentration of artists in the UK besides London. At Penlee Park, there is an art gallery which has been open for over 100 years. It houses works by the famous artist Stanhope Forbes. Nearby St Ives also offers world class galleries such as the Tateand the Barbara Hepworth Museum.
