Whether it’s for a summer trip to the beach, a winter getaway from the cold weather elsewhere, or a chance to explore a new and different place, Florida is an excellent destination any time of the year. South Florida is particularly known for warm, sunny weather and great beaches but there’s a lot more to it than that. A trip to the principal city in this region offers a wide variety of options as there a number of unique and exciting places to see in Miami.

South Beach and Miami Beach are iconic locations in this coastal city and are certainly worth a visit, but a lesser-known spot to consider is Star Island. Located within Miami Beach, this artificial island contains a number of huge homes, many of which are owned by musicians, professional athletes and other celebrities. Many find this an interesting way to do a bit of sightseeing for free.

Coastal and inland waterways are also popular places to go. One can bike, swim, canoe or kayak in Oleta River State Recreation Park. Camping and barbecuing and also options as there are grills and cabins on the premises. On the coast activities such as snorkeling, deep-sea fishing and scuba diving draw a large number of people as well.

Those looking for a more cultural experience may wish to check out some of the many museums in the city. Some options for art lovers are the Miami Art Museum, the Wolfsonian Museum, the Frost Art Museum and the Lowe Art Museum. These offer a wide range of different types of art from various periods and places around the globe. The Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is a vast estate with art and historic furnishings in the main house in addition to the surrounding gardens.

The cultural mix of this metropolitan area can be experienced in nearly any spot in the city. The well-known neighborhood of Little Havana offers a taste of Cuban life unlike any other place outside of Cuba itself, while Little Haiti gives tourists a feel of the Caribbean lifestyle that lies not far offshore.

Fans of professional sports have lots of places to go in Miami. Sun Life Stadium is home to the Dolphins of the National Football League, while the Marlins of Major League Baseball play their home games in Marlins Park. Although it may not be an easy ticket, a trip to American Airlines Arena to watch the Heat of the National Basketball Association can be a thrilling experience.

A trip to Miami without visiting the Everglades National Park would be like going to Paris and missing the Eiffel Tower. This vast swampland is well-deserving of its reputation as a premier tourist spot. Guided tours are available in which one can have the opportunity to see scores of unique plant and animal life. Camping, hiking and fishing are possible here as well.

These are just a few of the many places to see in Miami. Visitors to this southern Florida city will certainly not be left wanting for places to go and things to do in any time of the year.
