Morehouse College, the nation’s only private, historically african american liberal arts college for males, is enjoying its best football season begin since 1930. The team is presently 5-1 and trailing the leader in its conference, Albany State. The Morehouse Maroon Tigers are also ranked at number sixteen within the American Football Coach’s Association (AFCA) National Poll. This is the first time that Morehouse has ever been inside the top twenty five of this poll.

Morehouse plays in NCAA Division II inside the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. You can find five remaining games on their schedule this season, 2 of which is going to be played in Atlanta. All of the games are conference games. The higher scoring Morehouse offense has been led by a trio of quarterbacks this season: William Brack, Byron Ingram, and Donnay Ragland. Running back David Carter, a sophomore from Marietta, Georgia, leads the team in rushing yardage. Senior defensive lineman Derrin “Freight Train” Nettles has been fantastic on defense, forcing turnovers and sacking opposing quarterbacks.

The head coach of the Maroon Tigers is Rich Freeman. The Atlanta local has been at Morehouse since the 2007 season. Just before coming to Morehouse, Freeman spent two seasons at Lane College in Jackson, Tennessee, where he served as an assistant head coach along with the defensive coordinator. He has coached at a number of other colleges, primarily as a defensive specialist. Morehouse plays their home games at B.T. Harvey Stadium. The facility was constructed in 1983 and named after the most successful athletics coach in Morehouse history. The stadium has a seating capacity of 9,000.

Morehouse College is located on a sixty six acre campus in the historic West End section of Atlanta, just minutes from downtown. Founded in 1867, the college is part of the Atlanta University Center, which is the largest consortium of black colleges and universities in the world. Other institutions within the group are Clark Atlanta University, Spelman College, the Interdenominational Theological Center, as well as the Morehouse School of Medicine. Students from these campuses frequently participate in joint classes and social events.

The next Morehouse home game will be against big conference rival, Albany State University on October 23. It will be Homecoming for Morehouse, and they will attempt to take over first place in their conference. Students, alumni, and fans are looking forward to an exhilarating match up.

The Atlanta Airport Hotel is simply north of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and just southwest of downtown Atlanta. The Atlanta Airport hotel also offers a extensive array of features and services to make its guest’s vacation extraordinary.
