Thailand is one of the most popular countries in Asia for tourism, and often the first country visited for travelers in the Southeast Asian countries. The country appeals to everyone from young backpackers, party animals on a short holiday and families. The country has something for everyone. You can enjoy stunning beaches, diving, water-sports, adventure tourism in the hills of the north, or just partying like crazy at one of the full moon parties on Koh Phangan island.

Most visitors to Thailand will arrive in Bangkok as it has the countries largest international airport. The city is worth spending a few days in and getting away from the touristy Koh San Road area is a good way to get a real taste of Thailand. There are fantastic markets, Chinatown and stunning Buddhist wats to visit. There is also excellent nightlife in the city’s center on Sukhumvit Road.

Backpackers can easily get around Thailand and enjoy most of the main attractions on a modest budget, including some of the more well known islands. If you are on a short holiday to Thailand and want to enjoy beach-life then the choice can be overwhelming. Which island to visit really depends of what you want to do and what your needs are.

Families will be best suited to the beaches of Phucket, Koh Samui, Koh Pi Pi or Koh Lanta as these offer a higher level of accommodation options and better facilities. Party animals will love Koh Phangan for its party scene, especially during the full moon.

Those who like the hippy/reggae scene will enjoy Koh Chiang. Lonely beach on the island has live reggae each night and a beautiful beach. Koh Tao is probably the best and cheapest island in which to learn to scuba dive.

The James Bond island is here, were the Man with the Golden Gun was filmed. Krabi is also a top destination for climbers. Pataya and Hua Hin are not far from the city of Bangkok for those who have less time.
