Cricket in Cancun

Tropical vacations are no longer just for lounging and tanning. Increasingly more families are traveling to warm climates in search of adventure and sport. Fishing charters are fun, but can be expensive and what if nothing is caught? Scuba diving is always an adventure, but if you are not a fan of the water or the beaches are closed because of red tide what is one supposed to do? Consider an activity like cricket. If you and your party are from North America, there is probably a pretty good chance you have not ever tried cricket. It is a simple game, much like baseball. Not a lot of skill is required and almost any age can play.
Cricket is a team sport originating in 16th century England and batting a ball across a cricket field. At the center of the field is a long pitch with sets of wickets at either end. Behind the wickets is the crease. A bowler and a striker stand at one end of the pitch, in front of the wickets, and another striker stands with a bat at the other end. The bowler bowls the ball (usually with one bounce) to the striker who tries to get it out and away from the bowler. Once the ball is airborne the two strikers run to try and reach the opposite crease and touch it either with their body or the bat. There are innings, overs, runs and extras. Cricket teams generally have eleven members, but some indoor forms of the game include only six.
With the spread of the British Empire, cricket became an international sport. Most countries part of the Commonwealth of Nations have a cricket team, however the sport is most popular in England, Africa, Australia, New Zealand and India. India in particular has taken a firm grasp of cricket over the centuries. It is a very popular sport there, comparable to the hype surrounding baseball in the US. In 2008 the Indian Premier League (IPL) was created as a domestic professional league for cricket competition and is run much like the European football leagues.
Cricket was first played in Mexico by the elite classes, made up of diplomats and businessmen. In 1827 they came together and established the Union Cricket Club. The club became an place where members could play their sport, drink their tequila and maintain a level of ‘civility’. During the 6 month French Intervention in Mexico, Maximilian Ferdinand became an avid cricket fan. There are stories of the Emperor even trying the sport, but with little success. Soccer soon beat out cricket in popularity among the younger set of athletes, but the game is still played all over Mexico.
Mexico has had a national cricket team for many years, but it was not until 2004 that it became an affiliate member if the International Cricket Council. When the Mexican cricket team has participated in world championships they have done well, placing second or winning their division title. In 2007 Mexico hosted the Central American Championship in Mexico City, winning the title by defeating El Salvador and Costa Rica.
Despite the long history of cricket in Mexico, the Cancun Cricket Club was not opened until just a few years ago. British Ambassador to Mexico, Giles Paxman inaugurated the club in 2005 along with much fanfare and celebration. With Cancun touted as such a lovely tourist destination, the addition of a cricket club seems like the icing on the cake. Now international cricket enthusiasts from around the world choose Cancun as a place to enjoy beaches, drink margaritas and play cricket. Travelers from Australia, South Africa and India flock to the resort town on an annual basis. When you are in Cancun, seek out the Cancun Cricket club and book yourself some time on the pitch! There is no doubt you will have a great time learning the sport.
