Central Portugal – A Trip Must!

Multiformity is the buzz-word for Portugal because of its varied terrain, from the super sandy beaches in the South to the snow-capped mountains and bountiful green forests in the Central and North regions. The “Green Heart” of Portugal is the label given to the Central area due to the blanket of trees containing aromatic pine and eucalyptus trees, which cover the valleys and mountains. Natural beauty abounds in this area. Travellers who visit Central Portugal cannot miss the stunning nature of the environment in which they find themselves.

Scenic rural Central Portugal and its wonderful beaches on the Silver Coast are best experienced by car. In amongst the natural beauty of Central Portugal are interests for the more active person. For those who do not want to venture far from rural areas to get to a beach, then Central Portugal has a multitude of river beaches. Coimbra was the capital of Portugal from 1139 to 1260. Nowadays, it is the main city of Central Portugal. Surveying the city beneath is the University of Coimbra. It is the primary seat of learning in Portugal and one of its major tourist attractions. There is a marvellous Baroque Chapel at the University; in excess of 300,000 historical books are kept in the Library, and its ceiling is covered in multifaceted decorations. and some of the most fabulous gardens in Europe are here, of note are the 18th century Botanical gardens.

Coimbra was formerly a Roman enclave of the Aeminium, and some remains still exist, i.e. an aqueduct and cryptoporticus and the close by ancient city of Conimbriga has some of the most impressive Roman ruins located anywhere in Europe. Furthermore, the collection of museums in Coimbra are great, such as, the City museum and the Museo Nacional Machado de Castor, which is seen as the principal museum in Portugal.

Wandering along Central Portugal like a snake is the strong River Mondego. It journeys through the mountains, towns and villages and is at its most best as it flows through the city of Coimbra. Visitors can enjoy its energy by ferry, canoe or at one of the numerous and varied cafes and restaurants along its banks.

The typical Portuguese nature of being welcoming, hospitable and friendly is prevalent in Central Portugal. Initially the language looks challenging and tricky. Notwithstanding, by mastering a handful of the key words and phrases and trying them out on the locals, a repayement of homemade wine or port is frequently the case.
