A Surf Town That Time Forgot – Encinitas

by on Apr.28, 2013, under Travel

Encinitas is the quintessential Southern California beach town along the Pacific Ocean just north of San Diego. Men’s Health magazine called it “Southern California’s Last Sleepy Surf Town.” You won’t find big resort hotels in Encinitas. There are other cute towns and inns along the SoCal coast like the Del Mar Inn and Cardiff Lodge, but Encinitas is special – it’s different from other beach towns in San Diego county because it is virtually lost in time – still locked in the 1960s.

Encinitas is home to romantic bed and breakfasts, Stone Steps Beach, The Roxy Restaurant where you can buy a glass of rum and an ice cream cone, cute boutiques, funky old hotels on the historic Pacific Coast Highway, Moonlight beach, the La Paloma theater (still featuring weekly surf movies) and romantic Encinitas bed and breakfasts. Encinitas is so laid back that it is often referred to as “San Diego’s Sleepy Surf Town.”

Business people and surfers alike stand in line in front of Roberto’s Taco Shop every day. The sidewalks along the Pacific Coast Highway (U.S. 101) in “downtown” are lined with outdoor restaurants and funky shops. Talk about laid back – tourists and kids can be seen any day walking barefoot through Encinitas in swim suits. You will find surfers from 5 states waxing down their surfboards (just like the Beach Boy’s sang in Surfin’ U.S.A.) for a session at Swami’s Surf Beach before they return to their Encinitas Bed and Breakfast or Carlsbad Inn.

Moonlight Beach is one of the top five San Diego beaches and is only a block from downtown Encinitas, an easy walk from the Inn At Moonlight Beach Bed and Breakfast Inn. You won’t find a better beach to work on your tan, go boogie-boarding, enjoy a picnic or play a pick-up game of volleyball. Or, you may like to try your hand at surfing or body surfing, people-watch, work on reading that novel or simply relax. There is lots of parking, clean bathrooms and showers, a great children’s playground and cute little lunch shop.

There is an intimate B&B in Encinitas, more romantic than any Cardiff Lodge or Encinitas hotels, situated overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Moonlight Beach. Ann Dunham is the hostess of this romantic San Diego Beach Bed and Breakfast, said to be more romantic than Del Mar Hotels and more lovely than the Carlsbad Bed and Breakfasts.

The four suites at the Inn At Moonlight Beach are decorated like the rooms you’d find in a French Seaside hotel or inn along the Mediterranean. Each suite has a private bath and refrigerator. What makes Ann’s Encinitas bed & breakfast really special is that she bakes delicious home-made, warm-from-the-oven pastries for breakfasts every morning.

Author Terry Hunefeld retired as CEO of a San Diego training corporation so that he could spend his time on NOAA research ships studing marine mammals. Terry and his wife operate a lovely Bed and Breakfast Inn on the ocean in the quiet surf town of Encinitas. For more information visit: Solana Beach Hotels or Encinitas B&B.

Six Fun and Almost Free Outdoor Activities In Del Mar California

by on Apr.02, 2013, under Vacations

Del Mar is a stylish beach community in north county San Diego, California. Those of us who live here regard San Diego as “paradise.” The ocean-side beach towns along the coast north of San Diego – what we who live here call “North County” – is even more heavenly.

San Diego county is located at the border of Mexico. The weather is always warm and sunny. Along the coast are small, quaint beach towns. Del Mar is one of them, blessed with cooling ocean breezes and lovely beach hotels. Towns like Encinitas and Carlsbad offer attractions like Quail Botanical Gardens and Legoland. They all have absolutely gorgeous beaches.

Del Mar has a long history of the rich and famous because of a famous horse racing track built in the 1930’s under the direction and patronage of Bing Crosby and Jimmy Durante. Their celebrity status made the Del Mar Race Track Thoroughbred Club one of the most beautiful and prestigious organizations in the racing world. The race track brought a steady steam of celebrities to the Del Mar beach hotels and many Del Mar inns and resorts were established during this time.

Del Mar Ca hotels, inns and lodging accommodations are breathtaking, but pricey. One of the most exquisite Del Mar hotels is along the shores of the ocean – it’s The Grand Del Mar, an awesome San Diego resort that, as they say, “Celebrates the connection we all have with stillness, comfort and relaxation.”

Ranked among the best luxury resorts in the country by Conde Nast, L’Auberge, Del Mar beach hotel brings together panoramic coastal views, casual elegance and personalized service to create an outstanding romantic weekend getaway at a Del Mar resort.

The age-old San Diego County Fair has been held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds every summer. Locals refer to it as the Del Mar Fair – no one ever calls it the San Diego County Fair. The fair’s location is perfect because it is only several blocks from the refreshingly cooling breezes from the Pacific Ocean on the first hot days of summer. If you decide to visit the fair, make sure you get reservations for accommodation before hand from any of the Del Mar inns or Del Mar hotels.

There are many Del Mar bed and breakfasts, Del Mar Inns and Del Mar hotels, but the best values are fount at the Inn At Moonlight Beach. This boutique inn is intimate, quaint and near the beach; rates are under $165 a night. Visit this link for more information: Del Mar Bed and Breakfast.

Del Mar has two seaside parks – Seagrove and Powerhouse – both great for picnicking and stunning ocean views. Often referred to as “Malibu South,” Del Mar hotels are second to none, especially the luxury beach hotels. Visitors love the trendy cafes and Italian restaurants located along Old Coast Highway 101.

Terry Hunefeld boughtthe Inn At Moonlight Beach B&B in Del Mar and renovated it into a lovely inn on a hillside overlooking the Pacific Ocean in the sleepy beach town of Encinitas, just north of San Diego. For more information visit: Del Mar Ca Hotels or Solana Beach Hotels.

Encinitas is a California beach town locked in the 1960’s. Here you can see tourists and locals alike dining at outdoor restaurants, walking around downtown barefoot or in swim suits, just sitting in their cars at Moonlight Beach watching the waves or carrying their surfboards as they pedal their bikes to the nearest beach. World famous Swami’s Temple and more than 20 yoga studios add to the funky “cool” vibe.

The rooms and suites at Ann’s Inn at Moonlight Beach recall a lovely French Country Inn with private baths, wi-fi & refrigerator. Each morning Ann bakes her guests mouthwatering home-made, warm-from-the-oven pastries with their breakfast – all included in the cost of their stay.

Guests at the Inn might begin their day with a walk on the beach in either direction at the crack of dawn and then return to the Inn for Ann’s home-made breakfast – all included in the cost of the night’s stay. Swami’s Beach was made famous in 1963 by the Beach Boys and is just a ten minute walk along the sandy beach where world class surfers still surf every morning.

If you stay at Ann’s Inn, you will awaken in the morning to the sounds of the of her meditative waterfall. You can drift back to sleep take a walk or jog along Moonlight Beach as Encinitas awakens.

After their early morning activities, guests return to the Inn and relax with a cup of fresh, hot Starbucks coffee and the morning newspaper in Ann’s breakfast sunroom, or enjoy their breakfast outside in the sunshine next to her soothing waterfall.

In the evenings, guests enjoy romantic moonlit walks on the beach. Others prefer to relax on the front porch of the Inn with a glass of wine while they enjoy the twilight over the ocean.
